Goodies and Baddies || Solomon Stories || 1 Kings 11

In fiction, we can categorise characters into Goodies and Baddies, but real life is much harder. Is Solomon a Goodie or a Baddie?

Tim Johnson wraps up our series looking at the life of Solomon.

Solomon's story starts off pretty well, but halfway through chapter 10, the author of 1 Kings starts subtly digging at Solomon's actions and decisions - listing the things he's done that contradict God's instructions for kings.

God's story is woven through time, spanning generations and generations, culminating in the birth of Jesus, through the Holy Spirit and a human mother - Mary. Mary and her cousin Elizabeth were entrusted with key parts of God's plan of redemption, and they fell to their knees in worship of God, trusting him because of the way he had worked in the lives of their people for so long. We as followers of Jesus are part of God's story too - will you trust him in the same way Mary did?

With nearly two years of cancelled plans under our belts, you'd be forgiven for suffering from 'hope fatigue'. Why bother getting excited about plans to come, when they'll probably get cancelled anyway?

The angel speaking to Mary offers her something exciting and thrilling; a miracle baby who will grow up to be the saviour of the world. This message sparks a thrill of hope for Mary, and for us all.

Overflowing with Thanksgiving || Thank FULL || Colossians 2:6-7

November 17, 2021

On our 154th Anniversary, we give thanks to God for the life and ministry of St John's. But what would have happened if 154 years ago, the founders of St John's said "Lock it in!" and kept everything exactly the same? Or if, when laying the foundation stone, they said "Great! Job done." and didn't complete the building?

A relationship with Jesus requires coming back to him, building on the foundation of faith, and deeply rooting yourself in him.

Give thanks in all you do:

Wake up in the morning - give thanks to God for your comfy bed.

Eat your breakfast - give thanks to God for yummy food.

Go to work or school - give thanks to God for work and education.

Being grateful is good for us; it increases the quality of your sleep, reduces stress, and decreases the likelihood of suicide.

Paul writes in his letter to the Colossians that we should be grateful for Jesus in all we do:

Wake up in the morning - give thanks to God for Jesus.

Eat your breakfast - give thanks to God for Jesus.

Go to work or school - give thanks to God for Jesus.
