This new series is all about delving into the heart of idolatry, and the variety of problems it presents to us in our life and faith. We'll look at four core idols - Power, Approval, Comfort and Control - and explore how idolatry is a challenge for all of us.

Carrying Burdens || Freedom in Jesus || Galatians 6:1-18

The final chapter of Paul's letter to the Galatians leaves us with an encouragement to support our brothers and sisters in Christ; carrying one another's burdens. As Paul has made clear throughout this letter, we're a family of believers, and mutual care should characterise our community.

Feeling Like You Aren't Good Enough? || Freedom in Jesus || Galatians 5:13-25

Do you ever feel like you aren't good enough? In this part of Paul's letter to the Galatians, he lists a whole range of things that are in opposition to living "in the Spirit", or living to get your own way; from sexual immorality, to witchcraft, envy and drunkenness. Just reading this passage at face value, you could come to the conclusion that if you can check off each one of these things as something you don't do (much), then you're good with God - or the inverse, if you have done these things, you're not good with God.
Andi Fidock takes a look at this list, and one that follows, with the lens of the grace of Jesus - that we don't need to do anything to be loved more by God, nor can we do anything to make God love us less.

Freedom from the Law || Freedom in Jesus || Galatians 5:1-12

Once Jesus came to earth and died on the cross, the Old Testament law of the Jewish people was fulfilled. It no longer held value, as everything needed for our salvation was done by Jesus. Paul continues his letter to the Galatian church by reiterating that the only thing that counts, the only thing with value is what Jesus has done - adding things to the gospel ruins it.

Before and After || Freedom In Jesus || Galatians 3:23-4:7

"Before and After" photos can reveal stunning changes. Before and after dieting and exercise; before and after renovations; before and after following Jesus! Paul, in Galatians, describes a before and after that the Jewish people went through - before Jesus, they were restricted by the Old Testament Law, but after, they were free in Jesus!

Claim your inheritance || Freedom In Jesus || Galatians 3:15-22

In Julie's final talk at St John's, she tackles one of the densest parts of the letter to the Galatians. The church in Galatia was looking back to the time before Jesus, at the law of Israel - something Jesus came to fulfil and free them from. Paul challenges the church, if you're going to look back, look all the way back to Abraham and God's promises to him before the law.
Those same promises are available to us, as our inheritance through Jesus.
